In just 9 months, DS Flexhal has constructed a 47,590 m² logistics hub.

A few hundred meters from DSV’s headquarters in Hedehusene, DS Flexhal has, in just 9 months, constructed a 47,590 m² warehouse and logistics building for DSV. The construction is the first phase of DSV’s plan to build their largest logistics hub in the Nordics. Phase I consists of five divided halls, each accommodating 13,000 pallet spaces.

Securing the biodiversity

The building, located next to the nature area Hedeland, is built at the bottom of an excavated gravel pit. The 280,000 m² plot thus presented several geological challenges, including a 28,000 m³ old, loosely filled “washing lake” that was impassable. This necessitated piling with nearly 2,280 piles under one of the five halls. At the western slope, measuring 18 meters, it was necessary to excavate further and thereby move approximately 250,000 m³ of soil and §3-lake needed to be relocated. In cooperation with Hedeland, the lake was re-established as two ponds behind the building to ensure the area’s biodiversity.

The new logistics hall is positioned close to the harbour, airport, and railway. To shield Hedeland from truck noise, the building functions as a noise barrier. The height of the building is determined by requirements that it must not obstruct the view from Hedeland. Besides warehousing, the building also includes production, waste facilities, an operations office, a garage, administration, and a 6,230 m² mezzanine. The building’s 40,000 m² roof is covered with NOXOUT roofing felt, which breaks down the health-damaging NOx particles emitted by truck traffic. Annually, the roof will be able to break down 421,120 g of NOx, which is equivalent to six lorries, each carrying 8 to 13 tonnes, driving 18 times around the world.

Not only will the logistics centre become the largest in Denmark, but DSV’s vision is for it to eventually become their largest logistics centre in the Nordics.

Steel structures, concrete elements and columns, as well as facade cladding for the administration building, have been supplied by DS Stålkonstruktion, DS Elcobyg, and DS Stålprofil, respectively.
